The Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Foundation makes progress in the voluntary calculation of its carbon footprint
Carbon footprint calculator for events
This project aligns with its commitment to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the UN Global Compact, and the Biosphere responsible tourism initiative.
The aim is to offer a calculation service to organizations responsible for events held at the Modernist Site. Using data collected through a short form, the CO2 footprint of events is calculated, taking into account the following aspects of the activity:
- Electricity consumption based on the room used (audiovisual equipment, lighting, heating/cooling, etc.).
- Water consumption by attendees.
- Attendee travel to access the venue.
- Overnight stays.
- Materials provided (notebooks, writing materials, badges, etc.).
- Coffee breaks or catering services.
- Waste generated.
- Transport related to event set-up and the purchase of materials.
- End-of-life treatment of materials handed out to attendees.
By applying emission factors from official sources, the total CO2 (carbon dioxide equivalent) emissions of the event are calculated, and a brief visual report is generated with the results of the corresponding carbon footprint, along with a set of good practices to reduce the CO2 footprint of future events.
This tool has been designed to be agile and to raise awareness of the environmental impact of events.
We encourage anyone using the Modernist Site to ask about the tool and try it as soon as it becomes available for public use.
